We had the chance to chat with the fine folks at VA Shoe Clinic recently to learn more about them and what makes their store special.

CAN GIVE US A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT THE VIRGINIA SHOE CLINIC?

The Shoe Clinic started off as a shoe repair and foot care facility, specializing in quality shoe repair, orthopedic modifications, custom orthotics, and specialty footwear. Over time, our customers desire for good quality, proper fitting, comfortable footwear began to grow. This demand created the focus and drive to bring in a variety of top products that would include sandals, work boots, western boots, diabetic shoes, socks, and anything that helped provide better support and comfort for the feet.

Today, the Shoe Clinic is known as the place to go for foot comfort and support. We utilize the latest technologies to evaluate pressure points on the foot and overall balance to help determine the source of any foot, ankle, knee, or back pain. We carry a variety of brands and accessories that are all designed to be functional, supportive, and stylish.

WHAT HAS CHANGED MOST IN THE FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY FOR YOU OVER THE YEARS?

The method of “sit and fit” when buying footwear has nearly all but lost. However, it is one of the core principals of our business. We want to know what activities you are involved with and what the footwear will be used for. We can then make recommendations as to what would be the “perfect fit” for their individual situation.

Additionally, you used to find size widths from slim to extra-extra wide. Nowadays, most footwear comes only in a “standard” width; not providing flexibility for accommodating bunions, swelling, hammer toes, etc. We specialize in finding and offering footwear that accommodate all those conditions.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT HASN’T CHANGED?

The need for comfort and support. Our customers have quickly found that having proper fitting comfort footwear makes a significant difference in their everyday lives. From being more active, having less pain in the knees, hips, and back, to enjoying activities that they were not able to any longer, a good supportive foundation is a must.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MAIN REASON CUSTOMERS CHOOSE YOUR STORE OVER BUYING THEIR SHOES ELSEWHERE?

Our customer service. We don’t try to sell shoes or orthotics, rather, we provide a solution to achieve foot comfort and overall well-being. We develop relationships with our customers. Our customers consider us to be “Their Shoe Store”. They tell friends and family and often bring in guests from out of town who have not had the experience of personalized service.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE CUSTOMERS REGARDING SHOE SHOPPING?

Function, Fit, and Style, in that order, is how customers should shop for shoes. Determine what you need out of the footwear, make sure the fit is correct, and then focus on the style that is most appealing.

Hi, I've read everything I can find about the Drew shoe company and it looks like it's still up and running and still manufacturing shoes. What I'd like to know is why are some of your absolute best orthotic shoes constantly "out of stock". The Drew women's Snowy Boot, was the most comfortable "shoe" I have ever worn. I wear them year 'round for my 2 mile walk. And believe me...I have tried many, many different brands of walking shoes, and have been to many foot specialists, and tried many, many different orthotics. Lost of money invested, still painful feet. I have severe "fatpad atrophy" with neuropathy. I can't walk 2 feet without something with stability on my feet. I am constantly looking for shoe with the same construction as the Drew Snowy boot. A strong but flexable sole, the tempered steel shank (very important), and that wonderful footbed and removeable orthotic. Which I never needed to remove. The suede material is so flexable, it never cut into the top of my feet. They were truly like walking in pillows. Also, the women's Glacier winter boot delivered the same comfortable performance. Both are totally waterproof. I didn't care how much they cost, they were the best. Drew still has them on a lot of websites that sell shoes, but listed as"out of stock". Maybe you have some in size 9, or even 9.5, that have slight defects sitting on the warehouse shelves I could purchase? If they sold well, why get rid of them? Or make 30 pairs and I'll buy them all? My search will continue, and I will still watch your web site in hopes you bring the "boots" back. Thank you for your time.
